Ship Handling

Target Group:

Master – Senior Officers

Entry Requirements:

Certificate of Competence as Deck Officer

Learning Environment:

Theoretical facilitation to be delivered in a U-type sitting Arrangement. Simulation scenarios are to be organized by shifting ranks/roles assumed by all attendees.

Goal:

Attendees will comprehend basic and practical aspects of ship handling, ability to respond to emergencies

Objectives:

  1. Refreshment of basic principles and elements of ship handling.
  2. Wind and current effects on a vessel.
  3. Stopping the vessel.
  4. Bank and canal effects, shallow water.
  5. Ship-to-ship interactions.
  6. Use of thrusters, rudders and tugs.
  7. Anchoring.
  8. Berthing.
  9. Unberthing.
  10. Handling Emergencies.

IMO Model Course 1.22 “Bridge Resource Management and Ship Handling”

Evaluation:

Knowledge-based tests, Classroom and Simulation performance
